What is a Phishing Attack On Facebook Messenger

Imagine you’re chilling on Facebook Messenger and you get this message that seems totally legit, like from Facebook asking you to confirm your identity by clicking on the link provided.

But guess what? It’s a trap! That’s what we call a phishing attack via Facebook Messenger.

Here is a real-world example of a phishing message I received on my client’s FB Messenger.

How Attackers Send Phishing Messages On Facebook Messenger?

Here are a few most common footprints attackers use while implementing phishing attacks on Facebook Messenger.

  • First things first, Phishing attackers use officially sounding Facebook account usernames like this “Account Quality Control”. Because that name won’t be available they use some numbers at the end like in this case, it is “Account Quality Control21304″. Most of the innocent Facebook users consider it as Facebook’s official account. That is where most of the users take this bait.
  • The second part of the bait is the “message topic“. In this case, they took copyright infringement (this is the topic Facebook often sends messages to users if there is any copyright infringement). Refer screen shot above for more clarity.
  • The third and most important part of the phishing attack is their desired action. In this case, attackers want us to click on the link that leads to their phishing site.
